A driver lost control of his vehicle while approaching a bridge under construction on the shores of Lake Ontario early Monday morning. The vehicle ended up in the lake. One man is dead and another is in critical condition.

This is what officers from the Toronto Police Service confirm.

According to a police press release, the vehicle was traveling at high speed southbound on Cherry Street; the driver then lost control as he approached the bridge under construction.

Still according to police, emergency services went near the intersection of Cherry and Polson streets around 3:30 a.m. Arriving on scene, first responders saw a vehicle in the water. They found that a man was able to get out of the water. He was taken care of by paramedics. He was taken to hospital and remains in critical condition.

The second passenger in the vehicle was later found in the water without vital signs. He was pronounced dead on site.

The firefighters emphasize that the vehicle is completely submerged at the bottom of the lake.

Police say an investigation is underway to determine what led to the incident.< /p>
