Violent gun crime rate jumps 9% in 2022 in Canada

Canadian police forces recorded approximately 14,000 violent firearm crimes in the country in 2022, representing a rate of 36.7 such crimes per 100,000 population, or 8.9 % more than in 2021, reports Statistics Canada.

Although it remains among the provinces with the fewest gun crimes, British Columbia still recorded an increase in 2022 of 12% of such cases, bringing its rate to 28 per 100,000 inhabitants.

Quebec ranked third among the provinces with the lowest rate of violent firearm crimes (24.8 per 100,000 inhabitants), down 1.3% compared to 2021. Only Newfoundland -and Labrador (22.8 per 100,000 population) and Prince Edward Island (10 per 100,000 population) had lower rates in 2022.

At the other end of the spectrum, the Northwest Territories have the worst ratio of violent gun crime with a rate of 232.2 per 100,000 population, followed by Nunavut (182.6 per 100,000). inhabitants) and Saskatchewan (109.6 per 100,000 inhabitants).

Despite some variations over the years , the rate of violent crimes committed using a firearm has generally been on the rise since 2013, and this increase is more pronounced in rural areas, notes Statistics Canada.

As for the rate of crimes involving the discharge of a firearm with specific intent, it has tripled since 2013 in the country, showing a jump of 244% in ten years.

The homicide rate has increased by 64% in Canada since 2013.

In 2022, the country's police forces reported 874 homicides, of which 342 were committed with a firearm, i.e. 44 more than in 2021 and 208 more than in 2013.

The rate of homicides committed with firearms in 2022 (0.88 homicides per 100,000 population) is the highest recorded since 1991.
