They are generally placed on the roof of the town hall, or on taller buildings, the sirens of the National Alert Signal make it possible to broadcast a sound signal, in order to warn the population of ;imminent danger. Recognizable by a rising and falling sound, you have undoubtedly already heard the monthly test which is carried out every first Wednesday of the month.

Indeed, each test has a duration of 1 minute and 41 seconds very precisely, with an alert signal which connects 3 cycles of this ringing separated by intervals of 5 seconds. Every first Wednesday of the month at noon, the sirens are the subject of an exercise. However, in this month of May 2024, the 1st Wednesday of the month being a public holiday, the monthly test could not take place.

As a result, the test of the population alert and information system (SAIP) was postponed until the next day… i.e. today Thursday May 2, 2024. The tests will take place simultaneously in the various municipalities of France, and will take place at the very end of the morning, between 11:45 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. So don't be surprised.

Indeed, in the event of a real alert, you must adopt reflex behavior in order to keep yourself safe and facilitate emergency response. By default, join a building in order to protect yourself and inform yourself about the exact nature of the crisis. Depending on the situation, the authorities can also indicate what action to take: protect yourself in a building, evacuate a dangerous area…

It was at the end of the Second World War that means of transmission and dissemination were made available to the head of the alert service of the national civil protection service. In the 2000s, the national alert network (RNA) was made up of around 4,500 sirens and 48 triggering sites, interconnected by wired links. The creation of the SAIP is for its part provided for by the White Paper on Defense and National Security of 2008, with a view to replacing the national network of ’ alert, and deployment was launched in 2013.

Recall that since 2022, the new FR-Alert system, combining cellular broadcast and geolocated SMS, has been operational and connected to the SAIP .
