The end of the thermal engine in 2035 is still a horizon for Europe and electric vehicles traveling across the Old Continent have never been so numerous. For the year 2022, they represented 12.1% of the share of new vehicles, a trend which reflects the growing adoption of drivers. Behind the nicely varnished picture of the energy transition through the decarbonization of the car lies a reality that must not be forgotten: the cost of recharging at home.
Practices and financial implications of home charging
For the vast majority of EV users, home charging is the widely preferred solution. According to a study by the company ChargeGuru, single-phase (3.7 or 7.4 kW) and three-phase (11 or 22 kW) charging options vary; the former being more commonly supported by government aid.
On average, electric car owners travel 300 km each week by recharging their vehicles at home. In fact, this results in an increase in electricity consumption, of the order of 21%compared to owners of a thermal vehicle, the autonomy of an electric vehicle being lower than that of an equivalent thermal vehicle.
Thus, weekly consumption for average use (around 50 kWh) would cost per month between 30 and 40 euros. Compared to a full tank of gasoline, the additional cost is more than modest and electric wins the match easily.
In the long term, own and driving an EV therefore remains much more advantageous and economical for the moment. For now… In fact, electricity prices have continued to increase over the last three years. Since February 1, these have started to rise again: +8.6% for the base rate and +9.8% for the “peak-off-peak” rate according to service-public.fr. An increase which is partly explained by the abandonment of the tariff shield put in place in 2021.
Recharging your electric car will therefore cost well and truly more expensive than before, an additional cost estimated at around one euro more per recharge according to information from our colleagues at 01net.< /p>
Still, the difference compared to the fuel budget is still enormous. For equivalent models, recharging at home costs at least three times less than a full tank of gasoline. The price of electricity would therefore have to triple for home charging to be less advantageous than a full tank of fuel.
