You're not ready for the Volkswagen ID.Buzz California (neither is he...)

A little historical reminder, in 2022, Volkswagen lifts the veil on its ID.Buzz, a modern (and electric) version of its famous Combi. The German giant then has great ambitions with its modern Combi, and notably aims to offer the latter in several versions. Among these, the California version, dedicated to backpackers, which is intended to be a synonym for freedom in its purest form.

The Volkswagen ID.Buzz California not for now…

However, already in 2023, Volkswagen had serious concerns regarding the development of its ID .Buzz California. Already very heavy in its “standard” version, this version dedicated to backpackers, which has additional interior fittings, was then able to approach (or even exceed) the three tons on the scale. This is way, way too much

Today, this same ID.Buzz California has still not started production, and according to the brand's sales manager, Lars Krause, this should not be the case for a few years. Indeed, not only does Volkswagen need to correct this weight/autonomy concern, but above all, according to the manufacturer, the market is simply not yet ready for this type of vehicle.

Also according to Lars Krause, this would be the main reason for the unavailability of this model, and not the consequences of any technical challenges. “The demand is currently not met” thus assures the sales manager. Also, the German giant hopes that demand will increase in the coming years, and believes that it could be satisfactory by’by… the end of the decade.

In the meantime, Volkswagen should however market, during this year 2024, a new California version based on the T7, powered not by a 100% electric motor, but with a rechargeable hybrid unit.

At the start of the year, the German manufacturer formalized the arrival of a certain ChatGPT on board its vehicles. The now essential conversational agent will thus be offered with the latest generation of infotainment systems, on the electric models ID.7, ID.4, ID.5, ID.3, the new generations of the Tiguan and the Passat, without forgetting the latest Golf. Arrival expected during the second quarter of 2024.
