L'ex- Director General of Intelligence for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Cameron Jay Ortis was found guilty Wednesday of six counts of disclosing top secret information.

Four of the charges relate to alleged breaches of the Protection of Information Act. Arrested four years ago, the 51-year-old man was accused of intentionally communicating special operational information without authority, as well as attempting to share this type of information. /p>

Two other charges were laid under the Criminal Code, namely breach of trust and unauthorized use of a computer.

His request for release on bail was rejected by Judge Robert Maranger. A sentencing hearing will take place in early January.

The prosecutor has indicated that he will seek a 20-year prison sentence.< /p>

At trial, the prosecution argued that Ortis used his position within the RCMP to disclose confidential information to police targets in early 2015. Because of his key position in Ottawa, he had access to national and multinational investigations and coveted intelligence.

Ortis, for his part, claimed he was acting to protect Canada from a serious threat from a foreign entity.
