Disney+: the end of account sharing is coming very quickly

We won't have to wait long to see Disney+ bill its customers who decide to share their identifiers with people who do not live under the same roof. In an interview granted to CNBC, the CEO of the big-eared firm, Bob Iger, has just indicated a more precise timetable for the end of data sharing. count.

Disney+ has been preparing the ground for months

In detail, the manager announces the start of the “real first foray into password sharing” starting in June in a handful of countries. If France is not in this first salvo, we would be wrong to rejoice. Indeed, Bob Iger specifies that this strategy will be extended to the rest of the world from September.

For now, however, the CEO has not specified how much you will have to pay to add an additional account. As our colleagues from 01Net point out, we can imagine that Disney+ will be inspired by Netflix which charges 6 euros for this service in France.

Unfortunately, the entertainment giant has been preparing its subscribers for this development for several months. We know in particular that an alert system has been in the testing phase in Canada since last November, to the great dismay of subscribers.

Since September 2023, the conditions general subscription to the service in France have also changed and stipulate:

Unless permitted by your Subscription Offer, you may not share your subscription outside of your household. By “home”, we mean all the devices associated with your main personal residence and which are used by the people who reside there. (…) If we find that you have violated the General Conditions, we may limit or terminate your access to the Disney+ Service and/or take any other action authorized by the General Conditions.

Good or bad strategy ?

It remains to be seen what impact this measure will have on the results of Disney+. As a reminder, some observers anticipated a wave of unsubscriptions for Netflix after the end of account sharing, and the opposite happened.

Thus, according to Antenna data for the United States dating from August 2023, following the change, the number of subscribers increased by 27.8% in May, 128.9% ;% in June, and 25.7% in July, an addition of 3.5 million additional customers in June, then 2.6 million in July.

If you are a Disney+ customer, what do you think of this development ? Is it likely to make you cancel your subscription ? Tell us in the comments.
