Doubt hangs again over the future foldable iPhone

While more and more brands are launching folding smartphones, Apple has yet to officially express any interest in this type of device. However, behind the scenes, the firm is already working on the technology. And in recent months, a few sites have even mentioned the possibility that the firm will launch a folding iPad, or even a compact folding iPhone, in a few years.

Unfortunately, according to a new publication, there is still a lot of uncertainty. In an article published this week, our colleagues at iMore relay a new rumor from Digitimes which indicates that at this stage, Apple could still abandon the folding iPhone project. Why ? It could be that foldable screen technology is not yet “mature” enough for Apple.

But for the moment, Apple is continuing its research and development work. And according to the new rumor, the firm is interested in a clamshell design, like that of Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip. However, the Cupertino company would not completely exclude the smartphone-tablet design, with a horizontal hinge. But, as usual, all this information should be considered with caution, since it does not come from an official source. But, in any case, a foldable iPhone probably won't arrive for several years. Some sources even mention a release in 2027.

Huawei could overtake Samsung

In any case, while Apple still seems to be hesitating, other brands are already pushing hard on folding smartphones. And if Samsung was the undisputed leader in this segment in 2023, it would now be threatened by Huawei. Indeed, according to new forecasts, the Chinese manufacturer could ship more folding smartphones than Samsung during the first and second quarters of 2024. In addition, Samsung must face increasingly fierce competition from brands such as Honor , Xiaomi or even Oppo.

At the same time, smaller players are trying to take on the folding smartphone market by playing on price. Among these is ZTE. Taking advantage of the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, it lifted the veil on a competitor to Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip which only costs $599.

  • Apple has not yet expressed any interest in foldable screens
  • But behind the scenes, the firm is reportedly working on this technology and rumors are circulating already on a future folding iPhone
  • Unfortunately, at this stage, this project could still be abandoned
