Foldable screen sales reach record levels: the numbers

In this publication, the company mentions a 46% increase in its purchases in the first quarter, compared to the same period in 2023. In total, 3.94 million folding panels were purchased, according to the study . This increase is attributed to Huawei, whose sales of folding smartphones have exploded.

“Huawei dominated foldable smartphone panel purchasing in Q1 2024 with a 55% share, the highest ever, with the Huawei Mate X5 and Pocket 2 accounting for over 50%. of all foldable panels purchased in Q1 2024. Q1 2024 was the second consecutive quarter where Huawei led in foldable smartphone panel purchases, after holding a slight advantage over Samsung in Q4 2023”, indicates DSCC.

And for the second quarter, panel purchases should reach a record volume. Indeed, according to DSCC projections, panel purchases in the second quarter could reach 9.25 million units, a record. This high volume would be allocated to Samsung's mobile division, which sources foldable screens from Samsung Display, for the future Galaxy Z Fold6 and Galaxy Z Flip6.

Samsung still number 1 in 2024 ?

As a reminder, in the first quarter of 2024, Huawei shipped more folding smartphones than Samsung, which was relegated to second place. However, Samsung is expected to regain its position as world number 1 in this segment of the smartphone market, thanks to the launch of the Galaxy Z Fold6 and Galaxy Z Flip6. And today, this is corroborated by DSCC projections.

Indeed, according to this company, for the whole of 2024, Samsung should have a 48% share of foldable screen purchases, compared to 28% for Huawei. Otherwise, the study also suggests that consumers who want to buy a folding smartphone will have more choices in 2024. This year, brands would purchase foldable screens for 38 different models, up from 35 models in 2023.
