iOS 18: we have good news for Siri (and bad news for “AppleGPT”)

This June, during its WWDC conference, Apple will present its new iOS 18 operating system. And as all its rivals are all about AI, we expect the Cupertino company to stock up on new developments related to this technology. In the meantime, new rumors are circulating about the new features that Apple is preparing. For Siri users, we have good news. In his latest newsletter, journalist Mark Gurman (Bloomberg), who is today one of the best informed sources on future Apple products, indicates that iOS 18 should include a completely new version of the assistant.

Gurman explains that Apple will use large language models (the technology that products like ChatGPT rely on) to make interactions with Siri more natural. In addition, Apple would also offer a “more advanced” version of Siri on the Apple Watch. On the other hand, Apple fans should not expect the firm to offer a real competitor to ChatGPT or Google's Gemini model. Previously, rumors circulated about a model that would have been in development, and which would have been nicknamed “AppleGPT”. However, in his newsletter, Gurman indicates that Apple's chatbot is, for the moment, not in the program.

Instead of offering its own chatbot, Apple would nevertheless have a solution: a partnership. Discussions would have taken place with OpenAI and with Google. And finally, the Cupertino company would have decided to collaborate with the creator of ChatGPT. However, Mark Gurman indicates that a partnership with Google would still be possible and as a result, Apple could also offer the Gemini model as an option later.

Useful AI features and a new home screen?

Otherwise, in addition to an improved version of Siri, Apple is also preparing to present lots of useful features for the iPhone. Via a project called Greymatter, Apple has designed features that integrate artificial intelligence into its various applications. For example, we would have automatic transcription of voice notes, editing functionalities for photos, or even assistance with writing emails and text messages. Apple would also use AI to improve notifications as well as search on Spotlight.

Furthermore, in addition to features linked to artificial intelligence, iOS 18 might also include new ways to personalize the home screen. The firm would allow you to change the color of application icons, which would make it possible to better organize them: for example, use the same color for all social network apps. In addition, it would become possible to place apps without respecting the grid organization currently imposed by iOS.

But as usual, while waiting for official information , caution remains in order.

  • Apple is reportedly preparing an improved version of Siri for iOS 18, which will be presented this month of June
  • On the other hand, the firm is not yet launching its own chatbot and should instead announce a partnership with the creator of ChatGPT
  • Useful new features should arrive on Apple applications for the iPhone
  • In addition, the firm would offer new ways to personalize the home screen
