Among the iPhones of 2022, there are the iPhone 14 and the iPhone 14 Pro. While the other two models have XXL screens, the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro maintain reasonable dimensions, with 6.1-inch screens. So in terms of size, it's the same thing.

But as you will see, choosing between the iPhone 14 and the iPhone 14 Pro is not a simple thing. Indeed, if the iPhone 14 has a more reasonable price, the iPhone 14 Pro reserves most of the new features. It is therefore important to highlight all the differences between iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro, in order to make the right choice.

On the one hand, the iPhone 14 Pro is full of new features and its advantages compared to the iPhone 14 are numerous. However, its price is also higher. Knowing the differences between iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro will allow you to know if these advantages justify the difference between the prices of these two models revealed by Apple on September 7. Below, our comparison.

Let's start this comparison between an iPhone 14 and an iPhone 14 Pro with the design. In this area, the differences between the two models are numerous. They not only affect the camera module on the back, but also the screen and its design. While retaining Apple's visual language and chassis shape, the iPhone 14 Pro has an innovative design. On the iPhone 14 side, this could be reminiscent of the previous generation model.

Design: difference between iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro

As mentioned above, without straying too far from the iPhone 13 Pro model, the iPhone 14 Pro is full of new design features. First of all, the screen: on iPhone 14 Pro, Apple has removed the notch (finally!). On this model, the front camera and Face ID sensors are positioned on cutouts on the screen (a bit like on Android models).

Apple has centered these cutouts and so that they do not ruin the design, the firm has modified the software so that it takes better advantage of the new configuration.

In fact, Apple created the Dynamic Island function in order to exploit the space occupied by these cutouts to display relevant information from applications, or for shortcuts. This ingenious system imagined by Apple means that we almost do not notice the existence of cutouts on the screen.

For its part, the iPhone 14 has a more classic screen (for an iPhone). The front sensors are positioned on a notch. On the other hand, whether on the iPhone 14 or on the iPhone 14 Pro, we have a front made of Ceramic Shield, a material which gives the screen very good resistance to shocks and scratches.

Concerning the back, since the iPhone 14 and the iPhone 14 Pro do not have the same number of sensors, we have different camera modules (it is more protruding on the Pro model). Furthermore, the back of the iPhone 14 Pro is made of textured matte glass and its frame is made of stainless steel. For its part, the iPhone 14 has a glass back (classic) and the chassis is aluminum.

In terms of design alone, there are big differences between the iPhone 14 and the iPhone 14 Pro. It's difficult, however, to say which one is the best, since it's all a question of taste.

iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro: colors

Your choice between iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro could also be based on colors. Indeed, in addition to having different designs and materials, these two models also have differences regarding the colors available.

iPhone 14 Pro is available in Space Black, Silver, Gold, and Deep Purple.

Traditionally, every year, Apple presents a new chip for iPhone and equips all its new high-end models with the same component. But for the iPhone 14, the firm breaks with its traditions. Indeed, we have an A16 chip on iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, while we will make do with an A15 chip (the one from last year) on iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus.

So, just in terms of performance, there is already a huge difference between iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro. And the Pro model has other advantages, whether in terms of features or functionality. Below is a table summarizing the difference between iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro in terms of technical data sheets.

iPhone 14 vs iPhone 14 Pro: feature comparison

When it comes to performance, it would be more relevant to make a comparison between iPhone 14 and iPhone 13 Pro. Indeed, like this 2021 model, the iPhone 14 has an A15 chip engraved in 5 nanometers with 5 GPU cores. But despite being an older chip, the A15 Bionic still produces very good performance compared to the competition.

On the iPhone 14 Pro side, we have something new. Indeed, this model is equipped with the new A16 Bionic chip which integrates a CPU with two high-performance cores and four high-efficiency cores, as well as a more efficient 5-core GPU. The memory bandwidth has been increased by 50%. Apple also mentions a 16-core Neural Engine which can manage 17,000 billion operations per second (for artificial intelligence) and underlines the importance of this chip for taking photos, since it is able to perform 4 000 billion operations per image.

Regarding memory we have the iPhone 14 version 128 GB, 256 GB, and 512 GB. And the iPhone 14 Pro model is available in 128 GB, 256 GB, 512 GB, and 1 TB.

Otherwise it should be noted that both models support the new car accident detection functions developed by Apple, as well as satellite communication for emergency messages, which will be available in North America from November .

iPhone 14 Pro: Apple continues to strengthen the screen

As with the previous generation, the quality of the screen is one of the elements that differentiate iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro.

On the standard model, we have a Super Retina XDR OLED type screen with a resolution of 2,532 x 1,170 pixels at 460 ppi. Apple also mentions a new internal architecture redesigned to optimize thermal performance.

On the iPhone 14 Pro, Apple brought out the heavy artillery. This one has a Super Retina XDR display with almost the same resolution. But like its predecessor, the iPhone 14 Pro has a screen capable of providing a refresh rate of 120 Hz. But thanks to the ProMotion function, this rate is adaptive (it varies depending on the content). This allows for very fluid animations when necessary, while saving the autonomy of the device.

Apple also mentions a maximum brightness level equivalent to that of the Pro Display XDR, as well as “ the highest maximum outdoor brightness on a smartphone  : up to 2,000 nits, twice as much as the iPhone 13 Pro. »

In essence, the difference compared to the standard model, and the improvement compared to its predecessor are clear, as far as the screen is concerned. But that's not all.

Indeed, on iPhone 14 Pro, the user will also be able to benefit from the always-on screen, thanks to a refresh rate of 1 Hz, and other functions which allow this permanent display while saving energy. The permanently lit screen can show information such as the time, widgets, or Live Activities.

Camera differences

Like the screen, the camera is also used by Apple to differentiate iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro. However, both models benefit from improvements compared to the previous generation.

Let's start with the cheapest model. On iPhone 14, Apple retains the dual-sensor configuration. Additionally, the main camera still has a resolution of 12 megapixels. However, this one has a wider ƒ/1.5 aperture and 1.9 µm pixels which help improve image quality. And everything is accompanied by an optical stabilization mechanism. The second camera is an ultra-wide-angle, with a resolution of 12 megapixels.

On the iPhone 14 Pro side, Apple has brought out the heavy artillery. While the company had accustomed us to 12 megapixel sensors, this new model has a 48 megapixel main camera on the back. And for the first time, Apple is adopting a technique called pixel bining, which involves combining adjacent pixels to capture more light.

According to the company's explanations, in most cases, the sensor combines groups of four pixels to form larger pixels of 2.44 µm. This has two advantages: improving the result in low light, and having reasonable file sizes, since the result of this processing is a 12 megapixel photo.

But this sensor also allows you to have a x2 zoom while retaining only the central 12 megapixels. And it allows you to have more details for ProRAW photos. And professionals will be delighted to learn that Apple has introduced new processes for video, including Dolby Vision HDR.

This 48-megapixel main sensor is accompanied by a 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle with 1.4 µm pixels, which provides greater sharpness and detail. And the third sensor is a telephoto lens capable of providing x3.

zoom

Otherwise, on the front, Apple is equipping its iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro with a new TrueDepth front camera which, thanks to the ƒ/1.9 aperture, captures better images in low light .

The good news is that some of the iPhone 14 Pro camera improvements are also available on iPhone 14. On both models, you have end-to-end Dolby Vision HDR, Cinematic mode in 4K quality at 30 fps and 4K at 24 fps, or the Action mode which allows you to shoot extremely smooth videos despite shakes and vibrations. And whether on iPhone 14 or iPhone 14 Pro, you will also benefit from the Photonic Engine function which concerns the photo processing part and which improves quality in low light.

Autonomy and recharge

In terms of autonomy, we have a little extra on the iPhone 14 Pro compared to the standard model. According to Apple's theoretical data, the iPhone 14 Pro can last 23 hours of video playback and 20 hours of video streaming. For its part, the iPhone 14 is satisfied with 20 hours of video playback, and 16 hours of video streaming. The fact that the two models do not use the same chip must certainly have had an impact.

On the other hand, regarding the charging speed, it is the same on iPhone 14 and on iPhone 14 Pro. After 30 minutes of charging with a 20W adapter, you will have a half-full battery. Note that wired charging of these new iPhones is still done via the Lightning edge.

As usual, the price difference between the standard model and the Pro model is not negligible. But what’s new for this generation is that you won’t find an iPhone 14 model for less than 1,000 euros.

Here are the complete prices for the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro models:

  • iPhone 14 128 GB: €1,019
  • iPhone 14 256 GB: €1,149
  • iPhone 14 512 GB: €1,409
  • iPhone 14 Pro 128 GB: €1,329
  • iPhone 14 Pro 256 GB: €1,459
  • iPhone 14 Pro 512 GB: €1,719
  • iPhone 14 Pro 1TB: €1,979

It will be possible to pre-order the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro from September 9 at 2 p.m.. Then, the iPhone 14 and 14 Pro will see deliveries begin from September 16.

Every year, Apple offers features that are only available on its Pro models. However, for the 2022 iPhones, the firm has differentiated the two models even more. The iPhone 14 Pro thus concentrates most of the new features, such as the new design without notch of the screen, the A16 chip, the 48 megapixel camera or the 120 Hz screen on permanently.

The iPhone 14 is completely outdated (but not necessarily if we compare to the competition), with its A15 Bionic chip, its notch and its 12 megapixel camera. But this model also benefits from some new features, whether in terms of photography or connectivity, with the arrival of satellite communication. And of course, the choice of colors offered by Apple can also weigh.

On the other hand, the iPhone 14 is cheaper. And for many users, who do not necessarily need the new features of the iPhone 14 Pro, this data can also tip the balance.
