Major-General Dany Fortin has left the army, The Canadian Press has learned.

A source close to Mr. Fortin, who x27;is expressed on condition of not being identified because she was not authorized to speak publicly about it, affirms that a small reception to mark her departure took place Friday at the officers' mess of the Canadian Army in Ottawa.

In May 2021, Dany Fortin was removed from his position as senior manager of the Canadian COVID-19 vaccine deployment campaign. He was then the subject of an investigation for an allegation dating back to 1988, when he was at the Royal Military College of Saint-Jean, in Montérégie.

The major general was then accused of sexual assault in August 2021, but he was acquitted last December, following a trial in the Superior Court of Quebec, in Gatineau. /p>

A month later, following an internal review process, the Canadian Armed Forces concluded that, on the preponderance probabilities, Major General Fortin had not committed sexual misconduct. However, the officer was not reassigned to a new position and his terms of service in the army expired last July.

Mr. Fortin also recently settled his civil suit against the army and senior government officials, for an undisclosed amount.

Interviewed Tuesday on his retirement, the Ministry of National Defense said it had nothing to add. Neither Mr. Fortin nor his civil lawyer responded to requests for comment Tuesday.
