Microsoft is preparing the PC of the future: here's what we know

© Lemon squeezer

Thanks to its unprecedented partnership with OpenAI, Microsoft is well positioned in the race for artificial intelligence. As a reminder, the Redmond firm is an investor in the creator of ChatGPT and has access to all the technologies developed by it. It is for example thanks to this partnership that Microsoft can integrate its Copilot assistant, based on GPT-4, into Bing, Windows, and even on Android smartphones. OpenAI technologies are also available on services such as Microsoft 365, GitHub, and LinkedIn.

And obviously, Microsoft is also working on the PC of the future, relying on generative artificial intelligence. Indeed, in addition to offering the Windows operating system for computers, Microsoft also markets its own machines, under the Surface brand. And according to new rumors, the next Surface laptops, planned for 2024, should have significant artificial intelligence capabilities.

In a recent article, the Windows Central site relays sources close to the matter indicating that Microsoft is preparing significant improvements for the Surface Pro and Surface Laptop. More precisely, the Redmond firm would make major changes to the design and would rely on the new 14th generation Intel processors, as well as Qualcomm for the Arm versions. Furthermore, Microsoft would equip these machines with a chip dedicated to AI, and would qualify these new Surfaces as “AI PC”.

Finally, a real competitor for MacBooks?

In addition to the fact that the new Microsoft Surfaces should have significant capabilities in terms of artificial intelligence, Microsoft would also rely on Qualcomm chips to challenge Macs. Indeed, the Arm versions of the next Surface would be able to compete with Macs equipped with Apple Silicon chips in terms of performance.

Of course, this information is for the moment to be considered with caution, insofar as they do not come from official sources. But in any case, given that Microsoft integrates generative AI into almost all of its products and services (even Paint), it would be logical that its next computers benefit from significant improvements thanks to this technology.
When it comes to performance, Qualcomm recently unveiled a new Arm computer chip that, for the first time, is able to compete with Apple Silicon chips in Macs. And it is very likely that Microsoft will equip its next Surfaces with this new Qualcomm chip.

  • Since the arrival of ChatGPT, Microsoft has continued to improve its services with generative AI, relying on its partnership with OpenAI
  • And normally, the Redmond firm should integrate many features based on this technology into its next Surface computers
  • The Arm versions of the next Surface could also compete with the performance of MacBooks, thanks to a new chip proposed by Qualcomm
