Microsoft's new strategy to counter Google Chrome on Android and iOS

Microsoft has a new idea to encourage Google Chrome users on Android and iOS to adopt Edge: artificial intelligence. Thanks to its partnership with OpenAI, the Redmond firm has full access to the technologies developed by it. As a result, its Copilot assistant allows you to use GPT-4 and DALL-E 3 for free, models that are only accessible to paying users on the ChatGPT application.

Obviously, you don't have to use Microsoft Edge on Windows, Android or iOS to access Copilot. However, using the Edge browser instead of Chrome can make this use easier, thanks to Copilot integration directly into the Edge interface. And to make this clear, Microsoft has even just changed the name of Microsoft Edge on the App Store and the Play Store.

From now on, Microsoft's mobile browser is called “Microsoft Edge: AI Browser”. Obviously, the page also highlights the fact that this mobile browser allows access to GPT-4, as well as DALL-E 3 for image generation. Otherwise, in addition to offering Copilot on Bing and its Edge browser, Microsoft has also launched an application solely dedicated to this assistant on mobile.

Microsoft even changed the PC keyboard for Copilot

Today, Copilot and generative artificial intelligence have an important place in Microsoft’s strategy. This assistant is so important that the Redmond company decided to modify the keyboard of Windows PCs by adding a new key dedicated to it. The last time there was a change of this magnitude was when the Windows key was introduced three decades ago.

This new keyboard key was presented by Microsoft this week. And the first PCs adopting the new keyboard will be presented this January, then marketed in February. In 2024, we should also see the arrival of a wave of computers optimized for artificial intelligence. Moreover, with the replacement of old machines running Windows 10, the arrival of these “AI PCs” is one of the factors that will drive the growth in computer sales in 2024.
