A woman was seriously injured after having been attacked in her room with a sharp object early Monday night in Montreal North. A man, believed to be her ex-spouse, was arrested shortly after.

Despite the seriousness of his condition, there is no fear for the life of the victim, aged 46.

The 38-year-old suspect is believed to be the woman's ex-partner. He allegedly entered the apartment on Avenue Gervais near Boulevard Industriel, and stabbed her while she was sleeping.

The victim was previously attacked in an apartment in a building on Avenue Gervais, less than a kilometer from the police station.

The victim managed to escape, lightly dressed, through the back door of his apartment. She headed, on foot, towards the neighborhood police station located 650 meters away.

The police, alerted by citizens who had seen the woman, intervened quickly and had the victim hospitalized.

The police searched the apartment, the suspect had left the premises, described Véronique Dubuc, spokesperson for the Police Department of the City of Montreal (SPVM). A major deployment was made to try to locate him in the area, he was arrested and transported to a detention center.

The suspect is not known to the police; the latter found him two hours later in the neighborhood, where he was hiding. The man is due to appear at the courthouse this afternoon.

A security perimeter was set up at the scene of the alleged attack. Investigators, accompanied by a dog handler, and forensic identification technicians from the SPVM, comb the area on Monday to collect as much evidence as possible.

This event is in addition to other attacks carried out, in a little over a month, against women in the greater metropolitan area.

On January 26, the police were called to a residence on Sherbrooke Street, in the' district of Rivière-des-Prairies–Pointe-aux-Trembles, where they discovered the inanimate body of a woman. She was pronounced dead on the scene and her partner arrested.

On February 15, a knife attack in Vaudreuil-Dorion caused the death of two women and seriously injured another. Charged with double murder in the case, Fabio Puglisi, 44, has been found unfit to stand trial at this time.

Then, on February 19, a 51-year-old woman was killed in a single-family residence in Saint-Basile-le-Grand. The suspect in this case has been charged with second degree murder.
