Netflix will broadcast matches live: a winning bet ?

It’s an event in the world of streaming. Netflix has just signed an agreement with the NFL, the prestigious association of professional American football teams, to broadcast championship matches during the Christmas period. This system will be launched on December 25, 2024.

A near first for Netflix

The platform is launching cautiously, but it recovers a choice piece as our colleagues explain from ArsTechnica. Moreover, the NFL is an audience hit in the United States and not just the Super Bowl, since it represents 93% of the most watched TV programs in 2023.

At the same time, it is a good way to retain subscribers. Cable networks have also noted that even when the championship ends, customers keep their subscription for the following season.

This is one of the first times Netflix will broadcast live sports content. The first was a golf tournament bringing together celebrities. An event that is certainly nice, but which is not likely to unleash the crowds.

It must be said that the entertainment giant has never hidden its skepticism about with regard to these retransmissions, the rights to which are extremely expensive. Last summer, the company's co-CEO, Ted Sandaros, explained during a conference call:

We really think we can have a really strong offering for sports fans on Netflix without having to be part of the difficulty of the live sports licensing business model.

Netflix, king of sports documentaries

This does not mean that Netflix is not interested in sport, quite the contrary. But until then, its strategy has mainly relied on the broadcast of documentary series which have often been a hit and allowed certain disciplines to rejuvenate their image.

We are thinking in particular of Drive to Survive, the production which highlights Formula 1 which has already had six seasons on the service streaming. This trend then continued with the launch of programs dedicated to tennis, rugby, football, and even cycling, which have achieved varying degrees of success.

What do you think of Netflix's sports strategy? Feel free to share your views in the comments.

Things to remember:

  • Netflix to broadcast NFL games for Christmas< /li>
  • The service remains quite reluctant to offer live sports programs
  • However, it focuses on documentary series which work very well
