On May 13, the whole world was dazzled by the technical prowess of OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT. In fact, the company had just presented its new GPT-4o model which, in addition to better understanding the environment around us, is capable of interacting in a more natural way with humans when it uses a voice interface. Scarlett Johansson, for her part, was “shocked” and “angry”. Indeed, one of the voices used by GPT-4o, that of “Sky”, would resemble his own.

In a press release relayed by Engadget, the actress explains that in September, she was contacted by Sam Altman, who offered to use her voice on ChatGPT. The actress, however, refused this offer.“Nine months later, my friends, family and the general public have all noticed how useful the new system called “Sky” is. looked like me”, we read in this press release. “When I heard the demo released, I was shocked, angry and in disbelief that Mr. Altman was pursuing a voice that sounded so eerily like mine that my closest friends and the media couldn’t tell the difference.”
Sky's voice with GPT-4o would sound like Scarlett Johansson's voice in the movie Her. In it, the actress plays the role of Samantha, an AI-based assistant.
Sam Altman had also published “ Her”, on the social network X, May 13.
OpenAI removes Sky's voice
According to Egadget's explanations, Sky's voice was already available on ChatGPT since September. However, it has become more natural thanks to GPT-4o technology. In her statement, Scarlett Johansson also revealed that her agent was contacted to ask her to reconsider her decision, two days before the demonstration of the new OpenAI technology. “Before we could connect, the system was there”, nevertheless says the actress. It also indicates having hired a legal advisor who asked Sam Altman and OpenAI the exact process of creating Sky.
For his part, the creator of ChatGPT has already reacted. “Sky’s voice is not Scarlett Johansson's, and it’was never intended to sound like hers” ;, said an OpenAI spokesperson in a statement received by Engadget. “We chose the voice actor behind the voice of Sky before any communication with Ms. Johansson. Out of respect for Ms. Johansson, we have suspended the use of Sky's voice in our products. We apologize to Ms. Johansson for not having communicated better.” In a post published on May 19, OpenAI also provided details on the process by which it chooses ChatGPT voices.
