A collision between a pickup truck and a van occurred early Thursday afternoon on route 113, just outside Chapais, in Nord-du-Québec. Five people lost their lives, four of whom were from the Cree community of Waswanipi.

According to Hugues Beaulieu, agent information to the Sûreté du Québec, the van driven by a man was traveling in the direction of Chibougamau before hitting the van. It was returning to the Cree community located further west with three men and a woman on board.

What we know is that a van veered out of its lane and hit a head on into a van coming in the opposite direction. Everyone was transported to the hospital. Unfortunately, five deaths were recorded, four men and one woman, he explained.

Two re-enactors of the SQ are on their way.
