It's been a few years now since animated series adapted from strong video game licenses arrived on Netflix. We are thinking in particular of Castlevania, but also of the series inspired by Cyberpunk 2077, without forgetting the Onimusha series coming soon, as well as Devil May Cry. Today, it's the turn of another emblematic video game saga to be brought to the small screen, with Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, of which here is the first trailer.
An animated series (also) for Tomb Raider on Netflix
It was in 2021 that Netflix announced a partnership with Legendary, for an upcoming Tomb Raider animated series. The project comes to fruition today, with a first (short) preview of this series, which is inevitably eagerly awaited by fans of the explorer.
Remember that the Tomb Raider saga was born in 1996, with a first game launched notably on the Sony PlayStation. A first opus which very immediately allowed the saga, and its heroine Lara Croft, to become a new pillar of video games.
Quickly, the license was adapted to cinema, with two films at the start of the 2000s (with Angelina Jolie), without forgetting the 2018 reboot, this time with Alicia Vikander in the role of the explorer.
As for the upcoming series on Netflix, we find a Lara Croft very largely inspired by the latest episodes of the video game saga. For the moment, it is impossible to know the precise storyline of this upcoming series, we just know that Lara Croft will be voiced by Hayley Atwell, a British actress already seen several times in the Marvel cinematic universe.
At present, no availability date has been revealed, but the Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft series is expected somewhere in 2024, exclusively on Netflix.
As for the video game franchise, let's remember that it was Amazon which acquired the rights at the beginning of the year, paying a few hundred million dollars for it. A new video game is obviously in preparation at Amazon Games, and will run under the Unreal Engine 5 engine.
Before that, it is the first three opuses of the saga which will be offered on consoles and PC in a “Remastered” version, from February 14, 2024. Lara Croft is back, and that's nice.
