The top 10 most played video games reveal a big surprise

© Rockstar Games

The video games industry has been laying off en masse since last year. This multiplication of staff cuts is cause for concern, particularly because many experts believe that it is likely to continue. Various causes are cited, but some wonder if the model of triple A games, which are very expensive to produce and expose studios to great risks, is still relevant.

Reports from the company Newzoo spotted by our colleagues d’Écran Largebring a new element to this global reflection. Experts regularly publish rankings of the most played titles on PC, PlayStation, Switch, and Xbox. There we find in very good place very old games, often multiplayer, which know how to capture the attention of gamers over time.

The top 10 PlayStation 5 games are quite revealing in this regard:

  1. Fortnite
  2. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II/III/Warzone 2.0
  3. GTA 5
  4. EA Sports FC 24
  5. Roblox
  6. Rocket League
  7. Minecraft
  8. Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Siege
  9. Apex Legends
  10. Helldivers 2

The trend is generally the same on other media where we find relatively few recent games. Overall, a figure provided by Newzoo summarizes this fact: 66 titles account for 80% of overall playing time in 2023, and 60% of time spent playing was on games who are at least six years old and over.

Faced with this observation, the behavior of the industry giants will be interesting to observe. They have every interest in betting on big names that prove to be gooses that lay golden eggs for years. To do this, we still need to find the right formula or have sufficient funds to buy out a competitor.

But in any case this development does not look very good for the creativity. Indeed, why bother launching new video game sagas if the public remains clinging to titles and spends most of its time there ?

To go further, we invite you to reread our old article which lists the top 10 best-selling video games in history. Here again, we find titles that still feature prominently in the rankings, notably GTA 5.

What you should remember:

  • The video game industry has been in crisis since last year
  • In this context, we learn from several reports from Newzoo that gamers spend most of their time on very old titles
  • This raises many questions about the 'future of the sector
