These batteries will revolutionize the electric car: the Harvard breakthrough

© Lemon squeezer

It’s a feat that has gone relatively unnoticed. Researchers at Harvard University have developed a new solid-state battery that can be recharged in just 10 minutes. If you are not familiar with these, they are different from the lithium-ion batteries mainly used today.

The Holy Grail of the electric car

Concretely, scientists from the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) have therefore developed this prototype that can be charged and discharged at least 6000 times, more than all other pocket batteries.

Why is this so important? Quoted by Electrek, Xin Li, the lead author of this article published in the journal Nature Materials, explains:

Lithium metal anode batteries are considered the holy grail of batteries because they have ten times the capacity of commercial graphite anodes and could significantly increase the range of electric vehicles. Our research constitutes an important step towards more practical solid-state batteries for industrial and commercial applications.

In detail, the researchers are notably managed to overcome a major problem with these objects. Indeed, dendrites often tend to form on the surface of the anode. The latter are metal projections which accumulate on the lithium and develop in the electrolyte. Scientists say they prevented their formation by using micron-sized silicon particles in the anode.

&# 8220;In our design, the lithium wraps around the silicon particle, like a hard chocolate shell around a hazelnut core in a chocolate truffle, specifies Xin Li. Research will continue before, why not, a large-scale commercialization of this technology, very popular with automobile manufacturers. -it possible ?

Recently, the battery sector has been booming. One of the most spectacular innovations was claimed by a Chinese startup called Betavolt Technology. She promises that thanks to the “ miniaturization of atomic energy batteries ”, the autonomy of certain devices such as smartphones could reach 50 years.

Before getting carried away, we will wait until this technology reaches the commercialization stage to judge on the spot. This will require the authorities to validate this process and deem it sufficiently safe.

What you need to remember:

  • Harvard researchers have developed a solid-state battery
  • They have circumvented a recurring problem of these objects
  • These are considered the Holy Grail of batteries. They could allow electric cars to be recharged faster and achieve a better range
