Microsoft has reason to look gloomy… Windows 11 market share is still not taking off. And it's even worse: those of Windows 10 continue to progress! According to the latest StatCounter figures taken by FrAndroid, Windows 10 has re-crossed 70% market share on PCs in circulation. A shame when there is more and more talk of a new major version of Windows… the still very elusive Windows 12.
Opposite, Windows 11 seems to be tripping over its feet. In February 2024 its market share was 28.16% compared to just over 25% last month. Microsoft has little reason to appreciate the phenomenon which reveals contrarian behavior among PC users. Windows 11 is installed on virtually all commercially available PCs. But older machines may encounter difficulties in the event of an upgrade.

Indeed, the operating system requires, among other things, a TPM 2.0 security chip, which serves as a cornerstone for the encryption and security of system components. All the machines in circulation for around ten years, even those that are quite fast, do not have one. Although it is possible to add this capability through various means, not all users are willing to take this extra step just to install a marginally better OS.
Beyond this, several criticisms can be made of Windows 11. Some features have disappeared in the process: Timeline, Live Tiles… There is the new design which does not always please everyone. And despite this new version, Windows 11 retains a host of older interfaces, still essential for changing certain settings. A shame, because despite a new, clearer control center, the persistence of these interfaces actually adds more confusion to the ergonomics of Windows 11.
There is the fact that we are talking about a paid operating system, and that despite everything Microsoft still allows itself to display advertisements for its applications and services to its users. Beyond that, everything is not yet complete in Windows 11 – there is talk of the arrival of Copilot, but without any real view of the PCs which will not be compatible with this AI. The built-in Android subsystem is still taking a while to arrive.
The whole question now is whether Microsoft would do well to fix the flaws in WIndows 11 – or if moving directly to a more advanced Windows 12 is a better strategy. While waiting for the lines to move, the market share of Windows 11 seems to have reached a peak, which only allows it to progress thanks to sales of new machines.
