Will we see an Aquaman sequel? The director answers

On December 20, 2023 Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will be released in French cinemas. But promotion for this feature film has been underway for several weeks already. James Wan, the director, was responding to our colleagues at Empire magazine, when the question of a possible sequel was asked to him.

Never say never

And the least we can say is that the filmmaker is clearly not opposed to this idea, but he sets a condition:

I've never made a third film before, so I'd be willing to make another if I had the same freedom as I did with the first two. I'm not sure where the saga is going, so who knows? I learned to never say never.

Ultimately, this choice will be made by the two current leaders of the DC Comics studio: James Gunn and Peter Safran. For now, this idea seems quite unlikely, unless the film turns out to be a huge box office hit, which could change Warner Bros.' mind.

If we rely on the information reported by American specialized media such as Variety. The two bosses of DC Comics do not intend to retain the casting of the first DCEU films. This is notably the case of Henry Cavill for Superman who was recast. But logically the same goes for Jason Momoa in Aquaman.

The American actor is also expected to play the role of Lobo, a charismatic anti-hero very popular with comic book fans. This idea hasn't been confirmed by the studio, but it looks great.

While waiting to find out more, we can remember that Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will allow us to follow the adventures of the superhero who became a father. The latter will have to join forces with his half-brother, Orm, to save the world from a worrying threat in the person of Black Manta. We recently spoke to you about this villain who should break the screen.

For your part, are you interested in this second part of Aquaman, and more broadly, what do you think of the Where is the DC Comics cinematic universe headed? Tell us in the comments.

What to remember:

  • James Wan, the director of the first two parts of Aquaman, does not close the door to a third film
  • This however seems unlikely, but everything will depend on the box office results of this feature film
  • Jason Momoa could play the role of a new DC Comics character: Lobo
