After YouTube, this paid Google service crosses 100 million subscribers

Advertising is still Google's main source of revenue, but little by little, it is diversifying by offering paid subscriptions to its users. And the strategy is paying off, since today, at least two paid Google services already have more than 100 million subscribers. On February 1, YouTube announced that it had reached 100 million subscribers for its YouTube Premium and YouTube Music offerings. And a few days later, Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced that Google One has also just crossed this symbolic threshold.

As a reminder, Google One is Google's cloud storage offering. When users exceed the free 15 GB for their emails, Google Drive files and photos, they can purchase additional storage through one of Google One's offers. In any case, exceeding 100 million subscribers was not an easy thing. For example, Google had to end free, unlimited photo and video storage on Google Photos, which likely led many users to exceed their free 15GB quotas (and upgrade to a paid plan).

Otherwise, Google is also trying to offer other benefits to Google One subscribers, such as access to a VPN to protect data. And recently, Google presented the new Google One AI Premium subscription at almost $20 per month which, in addition to storage, gives access to Gemini Ultra, the most advanced version of its artificial intelligence.

Incomes are also increasing

Furthermore, in addition to attracting more and more subscribers, Google subscriptions generate increasingly higher revenues. In 2023, Google subscriptions generated a total of $15 billion, which is five times higher than 2019 revenue. “Subscriptions are growing sharply, driven by YouTube Premium and Music, YouTube TV and Google One”, Sundar Pichai also revealed, during a conference call with investors.

And it is possible that , thanks to the arrival of artificial intelligence on Google One, and the measures taken by YouTube against ad blockers, Google will continue to increase its number of paying subscribers over the coming quarters.

  • Google depends less and less on advertising revenue thanks to its paid subscriptions
  • Like YouTube Premium, the Google One offer has just crossed 100 million subscribers
  • Recently, Google integrated its Gemini Ultra artificial intelligence, the most efficient version of its model, to a new Google One subscription
  • In 2023, Google's various subscriptions generated more than 15 billion dollars (4 times higher than in 2019)
