1 – Google's Pixel 8 Pro

The Pixel range is often cited as among the best in photography, all competitions combined. This applies to older models, but also the most powerful of the latest generation: the Pixel 8 Pro. This smartphone is therefore equipped with a forty-eight megapixel ultra-wide-angle sensor. This is a technology that makes it possible to capture large landscapes, which is more difficult with a traditional lens.

A fifty-megapixel wide-angle is also included, allowing you to obtain very precise and true-to-life images, with little grain. The f/1.7 aperture allows you, as a bonus, to gain maximum brightness, especially when you take photos at night.

As a bonus, the Pixels 8 Pro can shoot 4K at up to sixty frames per second.

2 – The iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 15 Pro Max

At Apple too, we find excellent photo mobiles. This is particularly the case for the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. On paper, these two are similar, if you exclude the larger screen of the iPhone 15 Pro Max. In photos, in fact, we are more or less entitled to the same sensors on both models. Lenses regularly praised by critics, whose photos sometimes even win competitions.

The main difference between the iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 15 Pro Max is their dorsal optical zoom. Thus, the iPhone 15 Pro is now exempt from 5x optical zoom while the iPhone 15 Pro Max is entitled to it. This is the periscope lens mechanism. which allows this feat, sold by Apple under the brand “tetraprisme”.

With the iPhone 16 Pro and the iPhone 16 Pro Max, the The good news is that Apple should offer 5x optical zoom on both models. Unfortunately, the front camera should still be limited to only twelve megapixels: that's really too little these days, especially in the face of competition that achieves much higher scores.

3 – Choose a Huawei or Honor smartphone for photography?

Huawei Pura 70 Ultra

According to the ranking carried out by our colleagues specializing in imaging from DxOMark, it is indeed the Huawei Pura 70 Ultra which wins in terms of rear photo sensor. This device indeed obtains the best score of 163 points in the magazine, with only one major negative point to note: the video shooting, which is quite unstable.

Moreover, the Huawei Pura 70 Ultra is better than the iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 15 Pro Max in photos. Its zoom is also considered to be of better quality than that of a Google Pixel 8 Pro. What's more, the settings are easily accessible, which is not the case for all Android mobiles today.

Honor Magic 6 Pro

The Honor Magic 6 Pro is the second highest ranked at DxOMark. This is explained in particular by the excellent quality of the photos that can be taken indoors, with this mobile. With the Honor Magic 6 Pro, the rendering of HDR videos in low light conditions is also very good.

Unfortunately, even if the photo sensor of this mobile is excellent, the viewing angles of the screen are not. Therefore, the quality of the preview of captured shots may vary. Moreover, be aware that this smartphone also offers a very efficient zoom, including when taking ultra-wide-angle shots.

4 – The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is excellent in photos

It's difficult to talk about the best smartphones in photos without mentioning the iPhone 15 Pro, Google's Pixel 8 Pro and the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra. With their imposing wide-angle sensor of no less than two hundred megapixels, these devices offer almost unparalleled detail on mobile. What's more, the optical zoom offered with the ten megapixel periscope lens allows you to obtain 10x magnification. The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is therefore ideal for taking pictures of distant animals, or for urban sessions.

With the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, users also benefit from # 8217;a twelve-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens. This offers good results regardless of the time of day, but the fish-eye effect is still too visible for our taste. It's quite a shame, especially for such an expensive cell phone.

Despite everything, Samsung's smartphones have an advantage that the competition is not entitled to: Galaxy AI. This photo editing solution uses, as its name suggests, artificial intelligence. For example, you can use it to virtually remove an element from an image, such as a family member that you no longer want to appear there. Judge for yourself, the result is quite stunning:

5 – Our opinion on the Xiaomi 14 Ultra

The Xiaomi 14 Ultra also presents itself as an excellent smartphone in photos, according to numerous comparisons. Our own test of the camera describes it as a true “photographic marvel”. This could be explained by a partnership with Leica, a German brand specializing in photography for many years. Many professionals swear by this manufacturer.

With the Xiaomi 14 Ultra, you also benefit from Summilux lenses, which offer excellent color rendering and recognized brightness. The mobile even has a 60 x digital zoom, quite impressive, it must be said. Be careful, however, because it seems that the more the zoom increases, the less the quality of the images is correct in low light conditions.

Please note, in addition, that the manufacturer also offers a “Pro Photo Pack” allowing you to transform your Xiaomi 14 Ultra into a real small digital camera. The design is quite successful, but at a price of 200 euros, we have clearly seen more affordable from the Chinese manufacturer. Filters are also available, but we advise you to invest in a mobile app in this case.

The Xiaomi 14 Ultra is priced from 1,499 euros in mainland France, but reductions can often occur. The price comparison table helps you find the best deals from local online retailers. Its prices are updated several times a day, by us.

6 – Oppo Find has almost nothing to envy of the competition on the photo side. The device firstly offers a very large 6.82-inch screen for viewing and editing captured images, which is not negligible, especially more when we know that the pixel density achieved is monstrous. Count 1 528 pixels per inch, here.

On the technical sheet side, the Oppo Find X7 Ultra is equipped with no less than four different sensors on the back. First of all, we find a fifty-megapixel wide-angle, which offers excellent results in video and photos. With this, a fifty megapixel periscope lens allows you to magnify subjects with an optical zoom of up to 6x. In sports photography, in particular, this asset is quite appreciated, particularly for skiing, cycling or trekking.

The Oppo Find X7 Ultra is also equipped with &#8217 ;a fifty-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera and a thirty-two-megapixel wide-angle selfie camera.

7 – Pixel 8a: excellent value for money

Finally, we chose to mention the case of the Pixel 8a from Google. Of course, it may not be the best smartphone in our comparison for photography. It may even be the least efficient in this area. But for value for money, the quality of this ratio measuring photo performance, then the Pixel 8a is undoubtedly the king of its category.

Indeed, this mobile offers photo capabilities quite similar to the Pixel 8 Pro, with for example the possibility of shooting in 4K at thirty images per second thanks to the front photo sensor. On the Google Pixel 8a, we even have a sixty-four megapixel wide-angle lens, compared to only fifty megapixels on the Google Pixel 8 Pro! To be expected, therefore: less grain in the image with the most affordable model, in theory.

The Google Pixel 8a is the 'mid-range' smartphone. from Mountain View, directly competing with the third generation iPhone SE. But in terms of imaging, the advantages of the Pixel 8a for photography beat those of Apple's small mobile hands down. The screen is also much larger, still with 6.1 inches on the front of the Pixel 8a, like an iPhone 15 Pro. Compared to only 4.7 inches for a third generation iPhone SE.

Only downsides, and not the least: the Google Pixel 8a recharges a little too slowly , and the manufacturer could have offered us a more borderless design than today. Let's bet that the Pixel 9a will be able to correct the situation…
