Fairphone wants to make its smartphones both eco-friendly and competitive

© Presse Citron

The European brand Fairphone has been present in the smartphone market for years. And although it does not sell a very high volume of smartphones, it has made itself known thanks to its ecological, ethical products with a very long lifespan. Indeed, to encourage users to keep the same device as long as possible, Fairphone offers modular devices that are easy to repair, and which receive security updates for a very long time.

However, the problem with Fairphone is that despite its notoriety, it is still a small brand. And its smartphones have niche products that are not competitive enough compared to competitors' products. For example, the manufacturer sells the Fairphone 5 for 699 euros, while you could buy more efficient smartphones at the same price, from Chinese manufacturers or from Samsung.

The good news is that Fairphone is aware of this problem. And recently, in an interview with the German newspaper Handelsblatt (via Android Police), its CEO Reinier Hendriks discussed the company's plan to make the brand more competitive.

Cheaper and more available products

Fairphone's plan includes expansion into new markets. And, in addition to that, according to Android Police, Fairphone also plans to change the way it communicates with potential customers about its products. Currently, Fairphone is reportedly targeting 23 new markets.

But the most important thing is that Fairphone will also try to lower the prices of its smartphones. The company would like to work more closely with the supply chain and its software partners to lower costs and improve the user experience. Regarding prices, the CEO of Fairphone would like it to drop to 400 euros.

In any case, when it comes to the lifespan of smartphones, Google and Samsung have already adopted the Fairphone philosophy. As a reminder, Google's Pixel 8 series will receive security and feature updates for a total of 7 years. And earlier this year, Samsung also announced that it would update the Galaxy S24 series over a similar duration.

  • The smartphone brand Fairphone has become known thanks to its ethical and eco-friendly products
  • On the other hand, it is still a small brand, with uncompetitive quality-price ratios
  • But Fairphone is aware of this and it now wants to attack new markets, while reducing the prices of its smartphones
