Generative AI: Apple finally enters the race with “MGIE”

© Presse-citron.net

Unlike other digital giants, such as Amazon, Google, Meta or Microsoft, Apple is quite discreet about generative artificial intelligence. However, behind the scenes, the Cupertino company is working on this technology. And while waiting for the big new features that it should announce for the iPhone, it is showing its muscles, with the presentation of a new AI called “MGIE”.

According to the explanations on The Verge site, MGIE or MLLM-Guided Image Editing was developed in collaboration with the University of California, Santa Barbara. At the moment, Apple does not yet offer a model similar to ChatGPT. MGIE is a technology that combines large language models with image editing. Indeed, this AI allows the user to upload an image, then request via a text prompt to apply modifications.

According to the examples shown in a publication on Arxiv, the user can, for example, upload a photo of pizza and ask MGIE to make it healthier. In this case, the AI can modify the image by adding vegetables in the topping. Otherwise, we can also ask this artificial intelligence to apply modifications such as improving contrast, removing the background, etc. As reported by the Venturebeat site, it is already possible to test this technology, via a demonstration hosted on the Hugging Face platform.

Real announcements still awaited

For the moment, this is just a taste of what Apple could offer on its devices and services. As a reminder, he has already confirmed that he is working on generative AI. And recently, Tim Cook indicated that Apple will make a major announcement.

“As we look to the future, we will continue to invest in these and other technologies that will shape the world’ #8217;future”, Cook said from a conference call with analysts. “This includes artificial intelligence, which we continue to devote a significant amount of time and effort to, and we are excited to share details of our ongoing work in this area later this year.”

According to rumors, Apple is already testing an equivalent of ChatGPT, which would be nicknamed AppleGPT in internal. And it could present this large language model, as well as an update to Siri, at the WWDC conference in June.

In any case , Apple cannot afford to be late on this technology. Its competitor Samsung recently launched the Galaxy S24 series, which includes new AI-based features. And Google is in the process of deploying its Gemini technology on its various products and services.
