Netflix finally publishes its most viewed series and films: discover the top 20

Previously reluctant to publish data on audiences for its content, Netflix has gradually changed its policy. In 2021, the platform launched its weekly rankings, as well as lists of the most popular content (based on audience from the first 91 days). And today, the American company is continuing its transparency effort by publishing a completely new kind of report, entitled “What We Watched: A Netflix Engagement Report”.

And this time, the SVOD decides to publish raw data. Indeed, this report is made up of a table which covers more than 18,000 titles classified from the most watched to the least watched and which also includes the number of hours viewed, the premiere date and whether the title is available in the world or not. According to Netflix's explanations, the table makes it possible to study 99% of the hours viewed on the platform (i.e., nearly 100 billion hours).

This new report will be released twice a year. And this first version covers the period from January to June 2023. “Since launching our weekly Top 10 and Most Popular lists in 2021, Netflix has provided more information on what people watch than any other streamer except YouTube. And now we think it’s time to go further”, we can read in the SVOD announcement.

The Top 20 of the new Netflix list

The report therefore tells us what audience its content had during the first six months of 2023 This also gives us a list of the most viewed content. Here is the Top 20 (along with release date and number of hours):

Data to be considered with caution

If Netflix's transparency initiative is a good thing, it also indicates that this data is not enough to determine whether content on the platform is a success or not . “We have extremely successful movies and TV shows with both low and high viewing hours. It’s about whether a movie or TV show delighted its audience – and the size of that audience relative to the economics of the title”, indicates the SVOD. He also explains that to compare titles, it is preferable to use his Top 10 or his list of the most popular content.

Otherwise, as reported Deadline, during a conference call, Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos admitted that previously, Netflix's lack of transparency has created an atmosphere of distrust with producers, creators and the press. Furthermore, as the Financial Times notes, this lack of transparency on the part of streaming services was one of the causes of the strikes in Hollywood.

At the same time, the co-CEO explains that in the early days of the platform, it was preferable for Netflix not to publish this kind of data, because it still had to learn and at the same time avoided to give tips to the competitors.

  • After the weekly Top 10 and the lists of popular content, Netflix decides to publish its raw data
  • The first edition of this new report reveals the ranking of 18,000 films and series according to the number of hours viewed between January and June 2023
  • SVOD admits that the lack of transparency has created a climate of distrust
