Tablets: an unexpected rebound before the arrival of the new iPads

© Presse-citron.net

The global tablet market did not wait for the release of the new iPads to return to growth. A few days ago, IDC released its new report on tablet shipments. And according to its data, the market showed a modest increase in the first quarter of 2024. The last time we saw growth in tablet shipments was in the second quarter of 2021.

During the pandemic, tablet sales were boosted by the massive use of teleworking and distance learning. But subsequently, they fell, due to market saturation and the macroeconomic context. But, in the first quarter of 2024, tablet shipments saw an increase of 0.5% year-over-year.

In total, the brands shipped 30 .8 million units. IDC attributes the growth in shipments to the start of a device renewal cycle among consumers. However, this cycle should not allow brands to sell as many tablets as during the health crisis.

Apple, always number 1

  • Apple is still number 1 in the tablet market, even if it has not launched any new models in 2023. According to IDC data, the Cupertino company shipped 9.9 million tablets during the first quarter 2024, which corresponds to a decrease of 8.5% year-on-year, and a market share of 32%
  • Samsung, in second place, shipped 6.7 million smartphones, a year-on-year decline of 5.8%, and a market share of 21.7%
  • On the other hand, Huawei, number 3, saw its shipments increase by 43.6%
  • Lenovo's shipments (number 4) increased by 13.2%, while Xiaomi's shipments (in fifth place) increased by 92.6%

IDC published this data as Apple will unveil its new iPads this May 7. Since no model has been presented for a very long time, the event is eagerly awaited.
