According to recent data from Counterpoint Research, Samsung was dethroned by Huawei in the first quarter of 2024 in the folding smartphone market. Indeed, thanks to its new 5G chips, Huawei is making a huge comeback in China and has seen its shipments of folding smartphones increase by 257%, while those of Samsung have fallen by 42%. In addition, Samsung also faces competition from other Chinese brands, such as Honor, whose shipments have increased by 460%.

Galaxy Z Fold6: subtle but important changes

However, Samsung should once again become number 1 in folding smartphones after the release of its next models, which will be presented this second half of the year. At the moment, we do not know when the Korean giant's next Unpacked event will take place. But in the meantime, many rumors are already circulating about the products that will be presented. And among these products, there will be the Galaxy Z Fold6, which will succeed the Galaxy Z Fold5 released in 2023. This will be Samsung's new smartphone-tablet hybrid. And like every year, this is a highly anticipated product. Additionally, if rumors are to be believed, Samsung is expected to make some pretty interesting design changes.

According to the Sammobile site, rumors have already mentioned the possibility that the Galaxy Z Fold6 will have more geometric shapes, with less rounded, almost straight corners, like the Galaxy S24 Ultra. And today, this is becoming clearer since an Internet user has discovered, on a Korean forum, images of a fake smartphone which would show the design of the future Galaxy Z Fold6.

In addition, compared to last year's model, the Galaxy Z Fold6 would also be shorter, but wider.

Will Samsung recover its throne ?

In any case, the presentation of Samsung's next folding smartphones will be very interesting, because it is with these models that the Korean manufacturer should regain first position. To attract customers, Samsung should highlight its new AI-based features, which have boosted sales of the Galaxy S24.

But on top of that, Samsung could also offer more new models than usual. Indeed, in addition to the Galaxy Z Fold6 and the Galaxy Z Flip6 (the folding flip smartphone), rumors are also circulating about a model that would be called Galaxy Z Fold6 Ultra. It would be a variant of the Z Fold6 with a more attractive technical sheet (like the Galaxy S24 Ultra). Rumors are also circulating about a “Slim” version of the Galaxy Z Fold6, which would have a lower thickness, a larger screen, but which would not support the S Pen.

However, as all this information is not yet official, caution remains in order.

  • In the first quarter, Samsung was dethroned by Huawei in the folding smartphone market
  • But it will try to regain this first place thanks to its new models, including the Galaxy Z Fold6
  • According to a new rumor, Samsung would have planned some rather subtle design changes, but which will differentiate the Galaxy Z Fold6 from its predecessor
  • Other sources suggest that in addition to the Galaxy Z Fold6 and the Z Flip6, Samsung could also launch an Ultra and a Slim version of the Z Fold6
