We tried the Motorola smartphone which turns into a bracelet

L’Last year, Motorola created a surprise at the Barcelona show by unveiling a smartphone concept that unfolds. For the 2024 edition of MWC, the manufacturer is back with another innovative concept of a smartphone capable of transforming into a bracelet.

Don't expect to see it arrive in stores: like any concept, it above all allows the manufacturer to show off its innovative talents. Inspired by folding flip smartphones, this new concept outlines what we may find in stores within a few years.

The future of the folding smartphone?

Unfolded, this wrist phone displays a 6.8” with a very vertical format. It can take several forms to adapt to different uses. The tent format allows you to display two 3.8” screens. Why do it ? Motorola has imagined small board games in which the two players compete against each other. For example, we were able to play the classic power of four.

The Up-right format allows the smartphone to be placed on a flat surface with the screen vertical. The diagonal is then reduced to 4.6”. Finally (and this is the originality of the concept), it can be wrapped around the arm. Using a small magnetic bracelet, you bend the phone so that it fits the shape of your wrist and attaches to it. The screen size is then 3.5…. For an optimized experience, the interface automatically adapts to the screen size.

Battery integration was the engineers' biggest challenge. So they integrated small battery strips, all connected together. To protect the phone while maintaining flexibility, Motorola covered its back with a fabric covering developed in collaboration with Pentone.

We had the chance to test the folding movements of this innovative concept. The movements are carried out in small jerks, like an accordion. An impressive technical demonstration.

Just like the concept of a drop-down screen smartphone presented last year, this one is not intended to be launched on the market. Anyway, not for the moment. Motorola is taking advantage of the MWC to remind those who doubt it that it is a brand for which innovation remains at the heart of its DNA.

After a few difficult years, the American company (now owned by the Chinese Lenovo) is regaining strength on the French market. In 2023, Motorola has climbed into the top 5 brands having sold the most smartphones in Europe. A great feat for a brand that many thought was lost. Hello (again) Moto!
