Bikers, this very widespread practice will soon be banned

It will soon be three years since inter-line traffic has been tested in 21 French departments including Bouches-du-Rhône, Loire-Atlantique and, above all, throughout Île-de-France . Although there will still be tolerance from August 1, this practice will in fact become prohibited. Let's take stock.

A final decision awaited

As explained by our colleagues from Automobile Magazine, the Center for Studies and Expertise on Risks, Environment, Mobility and Development (Cerema) will analyze the data recorded over these three years. A decision will then be made to authorize, restrict or regulate this technique.

Supporters and opponents

In the meantime, very opposing visions clash on this subject. Jean-Marc Belotti, the spokesperson for the French Federation of Angry Bikers, explained to Cnews:

It has to be practiced in good conditions. Motorcyclists must have a suitable speed between lanes, not drive too fast and motorists must use their turn signal when changing lanes. In this case, things are going very well, it's just living together.

For his part, Michel Pons, responsible for the League against road violence, on the contrary, advocates a tightening of the rules: “Safety must take precedence over speed. For 2% of motorized traffic, that’s 22% of deaths. This still shows that there is a problem».

What happens after August 1st& ;nbsp;?

Once this fateful date has passed, we can imagine that the authorities will apply a certain threshold of tolerance before a final decision is taken. However, the Highway Code prohibits inter-lane traffic and you theoretically risk a fine of 135 euros. And in the event of an accident, it is also possible that the insurance company will decide to take action against you. We must therefore exercise caution, because the legal risks are concrete.

Please note that inter-line traffic operates at a maximum speed of 50 km/h and that the differential with other vehicles in the vicinity must not exceed 30 km/h. If you are a biker, what is your point of view on the subject ? Do not hesitate to provide your testimony in the comments.

What to remember:

  • Inter-line traffic is tested in several French departments for three years
  • It will be banned again from August 1st
  • A final decision must still be rendered on this file
